The Last Dragon - short story
Hey everyone and I'm back! Today I am going to show you a short story. Alert: It is a bit sad and TRAGICALLY tragic...but it has a happy ending. I promise you it does. It is a bit too magical in my perspective but what could I do? I had a plot ready and I just had to put it into words. And this story is a bit inspired by something in 'V-shine' a children's magazine.
Anyways.....
The Last Dragon
_________________________________________________________________________________
It was two hours after she’d been clinging to the piece of wreckage and the storm was growing stronger. Darcy was sure that this was a tsunami even though she was in the middle of the sea. Suddenly, a cold, freezing wave washed upon her. Darcy felt her hands slipping from the grasp of wood. She thrashed about wildly in the water, trying to catch hold of the plank again. But the water was carrying her away fast, and she used all her swimming skills to not sink. Suddenly, she felt the sandy bottom under her feet. But land’s so far away! she thought. She floated, and stared at the sky, and then…everything went black.
💙💙💙
Darcy felt herself waking up. Something was nudging her. She opened her eyes only to find…A DRAGON! She looked at it in terror, succumbing to it totally. The dragon nudged her again, and she felt a cold, icy breath. The dragon was colored icy blue and bluish-white, and its eyes were piercing. They were the kind of eyes which makes you want to totally surrender. But the dragon gave her a small lick, and it looked friendly. It was relatively small compared with the size that Darcy had thought of.
“Who…are you?” Darcy asked, summoning all her courage into those three words. The dragon nudged her again. Darcy gingerly reached out to touch the dragon’s scales. As soon as she did, a beautiful, clear voice that was definitely feminine, rang out into the air. “You must touch my scales when you wish to talk to me, as you cannot understand me when you are not. I am the Ice Dragon. My name is Shadow, and I control all the snow, ice, and frost in the world. I am the reason why winter is here every year.” Darcy withdrew her hand from the scales, as the dragon’s voice was so beautiful that she would become scared. She reached out to touch them again, as she didn’t want to leave that amazing voice with nobody to listen to. “Come with me,” the voice rang out again, “I will take you to shelter.”
Darcy let go of Shadow’s scales and walked just behind her into a small grove of trees. Inside, was a small silvery-grey cave. Shadow walked straight into it and beckoned for her to follow. Darcy took a small step inside, and as she did, she gasped. There were beautiful small silvery lights gleaming in the walls. In one corner, a small pond filled with little colorful fish swimming around was there. In another, a big, big patch of moss with fresh heather sprinkled over it was growing. Also, in nooks and crannies small patches of different flowers grew. Darcy touched Shadow’s scales again, and asked her, “Can I live here? At least, until I find a way to get home?” “You may live here, dear child. You may live here until you find a way to get home.”
Darcy walked to the pond and ran her fingers in the water. The fish swirled around her fingers and whirled around her palm. The water felt unlike normal water; it felt as if fire and ice were meeting, and unleashing this special feeling. But it was very sweet and delicious, so that didn’t matter.Shadow seemed to be doing something. Darcy drank some more of the water; it tasted delicious. And then she felt a now familiar nudge. Shadow was balancing something like a coin on the tip of her tongue. She bent down to let Darcy pick it up, and Darcy fingered it gently and touched Shadow. “You don’t need to touch me anymore. As long as you are holding that scale, it is fine.” “May I have a piece of string?” asked Darcy. Obligingly, Shadow tangled a braided rope-ish piece of moss and Darcy untangled it from her claws.
She then took the scale and attached it to the moss to make a necklace which she tied around her neck. Now it was touching her even when she was sleeping – she didn’t need to find and hold it when she wanted to talk to Shadow.
“it is getting late, my dear. Perhaps we should think about rest.” “I do feel perfectly sleepy.” Darcy separated a small amount of moss; it was actually a lot but it didn’t matter that much so she patted half of it out to make a sort of bed. After that, she got some more moss and took a little of it and heaped it up to make a pillow. The rest she spread over herself for a blanket and then she slept.
💙💙💙
“Wake up, Darcy. Wake up.” Darcy felt the familiar nudge at her shoulder and she opened her eyes. It wasn’t even morning; it was still night. Shadow herded her towards the cave entrance, and then she sat up.
“I need to tell you something.” “What is it?” asked Darcy. “I have found out the way to get you home. But, it can be dangerous, and you have to listen to me at all times.” Darcy listened, with a feeling of wonder in her heart. “We have to get a special herb from the forest. There isn’t much, but you have to get just a small leaf – that is enough. Come on, and let’s go.” “Now?” Shadow replied, “Yes, now.” Darcy got up and along with Shadow, ventured off into the forest. After about ten minutes, they reached a small patch of little leaves growing.
Guarding the leaves were these tiny hoppy-bunny creatures. Darcy plunged right into the midst of them, forgetting all about Shadow’s warning. “No!” Shadow cried out, and leaped in front of Darcy. The creatures swarmed all over Shadow, who roared. Darcy quickly gathered a couple leaves, but the creatures were gone, away into deep places of the forest to hide.
Darcy turned around, and she saw Shadow lying down on the ground. “Darcy…!” The strong clear voice, which was once so beautiful, was now husky and weak. “This is all my fault. I should have listened to you.” “You got the herb, and that will help you get home.” “But how?” “You must rub the herb against the scale. That’s it.” And then a small tear slid off Darcy’s cheek. “This is ““Don’t, Darcy. I will be happier where I’m going.” And then Shadow’s head fell back.
How long Darcy stayed there, she never knew. All she wanted was Shadow, nothing more. Not even a night had she stayed on the island. Shadow was gone. But the bitterest feeling was that she knew she could do nothing about it. She slowly got up, and then with a heavy heart trudged to the edge of the clearing. “I will meet you again.” she whispered, and then trekked to the edge of the forest. She looked back for one quick second, and then rubbed the herb against her scale. And then, the most brilliant light shone. So bright, that Darcy had to cover her eyes.
Darcy stayed there for an hour, until she heard an amazing sound. It was a whirr – a whirr of propellers! And then a helicopter landed.A woman and a man jumped out of the copter, and came rushing to her. “Who are you? Are you okay?” asked the woman. “Yes – I’m okay – and my name is Darcy Foster.” “We’ve been looking for you everywhere! You were shipwrecked, right?” “Yes.” replied Darcy. And she was helped up into the helicopter, and given water, and food.
Even those didn’t lighten her spirits. She silently fidgeted with the necklace the whole way home. When they arrived, the woman nodded. Darcy rang the bell. A creak sounded, and the door opened. It was her sister, Joy. As soon as she saw her, she began to squeal and scream, “Mum, Dad! Darcy – Darcy’s here!” And they all clustered around her, hugging and kissing her.
💙💙💙
It was two years later. The family was out camping and Darcy was the only one awake. She crawled out of the tent and looked up at the stars wistfully. In all those two years, she had endlessly wished and wanted Shadow to be with her every step of life. But she was gone, left on that island.Suddenly, a high, clear bell-like laugh made her escape from her gloomy thoughts. A shape of a dragon was whirling among the stars. Darcy looked up and with a small shock, realized that it was a ghost. It slowly weaved among moonbeams going lower each second. Darcy gathered her courage and whispered out into the cool night air, “Who are you…?”
But then Darcy remembered to look on the bright side, and she realized that Shadow would look over her forever. And then, she lay down and slept with Shadow watching over her, forever and ever. And to this day, if you ever see Shadow and whistle in a special way, she will watch over you too.

“Dad! What’s
going on?” called Darcy. Her eyes were full of fear. Darcy was on a cruise and
had just woken up in the middle of a destructive storm. “I think it’s just a
storm, Darcy. It’ll be over soon.” Just that moment, a crack sounded in the
air. “Darcy! Jump!” But Darcy didn’t hear him in time and she floated away on a
piece of wreckage, far out to sea. The waves carried her away and the wind tangled
her long black hair. Darcy clung hard to the piece of wood. Her hands were cold
and numb. Even though she knew how to swim, she wouldn’t have a chance in this
weather and sea. Once she thought she saw a shark and her heart stopped
beating.
It was two hours after she’d been clinging to the piece of wreckage and the storm was growing stronger. Darcy was sure that this was a tsunami even though she was in the middle of the sea. The cold wind started up by the dragon encircled
her, making her shiver with fear and cold. “You don’t recognize me?” came a
clear, bell-like voice. “Surely you must. Human beings always have been
ungrateful to dragons.”Darcy
gathered all her memories. Suddenly it struck her like a bucket of ice dropping
over her. “You’re…you’re not who I think you are!” Her voice was dropping in
disbelief. “Oh, but I am. You’ve always wanted me.” came the answer. Darcy
wondered if what she thought was true. Then the ghost blew a small icy breath
up into the stars.
Darcy knew then for certain that Shadow was the ghost,
sifting among the stars like they were flour. Shadow came down and said, “I see
you remember me. You’ve still got that scale.” And then Shadow nudged her, and
Darcy was overcome with nostalgia. Tears began rolling down her cheeks. She
reached out to touch Shadow, but her hand went through her. The familiar rough
touch was gone, gone forever.
But then Darcy remembered to look on the bright side, and she realized that Shadow would look over her forever. And then, she lay down and slept with Shadow watching over her, forever and ever. And to this day, if you ever see Shadow and whistle in a special way, she will watch over you too.
