Two Different Worlds - short story excerpt

Slam! The car door closed with a rather unneeded bang. A girl with ginger hair, bright blue eyes, and dainty limbs sat with a commanding air in the limousine’s back seat. A chauffeur was seated at the front, his dark sunglasses neatly perched on the bridge of his nose. “Drive, Johns!” the girl ordered venomously. “Yes, mistress.” mumbled the poor chauffeur, and started the engine. What could he do? He was the father of two young girls, and they were a struggling family. He did get paid handsomely, but most of it went into their school fees and into the house. Not much was left. All he knew was that he must earn a living, and earn it well.

                                                                         *~*~*

When Johns rung the bell of the tiny but well-kept cottage where they lived, a humdrum began. The small, outlined-with-roses door clicked open, and Johns put his hand on the shining doorknob and pulled the door open. Two girls burst out. The first one with long, light brown hair just like Johns’ own was Millie. Her sister Posy, a girl with slightly redder hair like their mum was younger than Millie, and eight years old. Millie was nine. They both were giggling and wrapping themselves around Johns – Mark – his first name.
“Daddy!” The cry in the air sounded again and again. If there was one thing Mark loved, it was being at home with his two little daughters, the kitten Tealeaf, and his wife.
