Enchantment: Back-story excerpt

Hai! Go look at the previous post if you want this to really make sense. It might not, but it might as well. This is supposed to be a sort of backstory to Madeline Rosy. I'll share Lillian's on here later.

---

“So, Rosy?” I heard her voice slice through the air, each word tinkling against the floor, like chips of ice. My fist closed around my dagger – the only weapon I had found in my cell. “Or should I say – Madeline?” My heart dropped into my stomach as she spoke my name. I didn’t dare to give the tiniest scrape against the stone walls of the dungeon. It would mean the death of me. I saw a faint outline in the darkness, a hand resting on a sword. I knew she could see me, but a snake came into play here – if I made the tiniest movement, she would strike.

I shifted away nervously, millimeter by millimeter. I could see her figure getting ready to attack. My hand crawled slowly around the handle of my dagger, and I made ready to wield it and take her by surprise. My legs tensed up. The exit of this terrible, dark realm was so close – I could almost see it, a sharp ray of moonlight coming through. I bit my lip, and bent my wrist, ready to wrench it out. I slowly put out one foot towards the opening.

It all happened in a blur. My eyes refused to look behind – my hand yanked out the dagger and started waving it wildly behind me, and my feet bolted. I could hear nothing, but I kept running. I dashed around the corridor and into the moonlight. I heard a noise in front of me, and five soldiers started running towards me. I made for the space between the castle and the dungeon, and heard footsteps pounding almost right behind me.
A scream came from behind. Has Lillian found me?
