The hammering rain pelted down on Madelyn’s pale blue
umbrella, making a thundering sound, like elephant’s footsteps. She hurried
along to the little French café where she was supposed to meet her aunt.
As she pushed the carved wooden door open, she caught a
delicious smell of pastries of all different kinds. As with most French cafés,
the inside was decorated beautifully; the tables and chairs were white and a
small chandelier hung from the ceiling. Greyscale photos adorned the walls. A
woman behind the counter was bustling about, placing fresh new baguettes in the
cases.
At a table for two in the back, a woman with chic, bobbed
black hair sat, wearing an emerald-green dress with a black purse. Her dark high
heels stubbed the floor. Madelyn grinned. Her English aunt wasn’t very good at
dressing French.
She hung her dark blue coat on a coat hanger, and her red
hat went on the hat stand.
She walked briskly over to the table, pulled out the
remaining chair, and sat down. “Madelyn!” said Emilie, her aunt. “I haven’t
seen you in so long!”
“Ma tante,” said
Madelyn, flicking back a strand of hair, “you need to act French. After all, you
are related to a Frenchwoman!”
Her aunt looked slightly crestfallen. Madelyn smiled. “Have
you seen any more Magise?” she asked, in a low whisper. Madelyn and Emilie were
the only ones in their family who were Magise, people with a special power.
Emilie could hear from long distances, and Madelyn had telekinesis. Each Magis
had a symbol engraved on the back of their hand, a circle with an infinity sign
inside of it. Whenever the person would summon their powers, it would glow
blue.
“A man-“ Emilie was cut off as a waiter came up to their
table. “Bon apres midi!” he said,
with a little bow. Madelyn caught a bluish tinge on one of his white gloves
that made her suspicious. “Bon apres midi,”
she said in reply. He lay down two menus on the table.
Madelyn hitched her long sleeve a little bit higher, until
the mark showed. She stared at the waiter very pointedly. He looked at her –
and then his gaze drifted down to her hand.
He gasped in shock. Emilie took her glove off to show him
her mark, and his mouth practically touched the floor. Madelyn indicated a
flower in a vase on the table, then pulled it towards her using her mind. The
waiter shot the cashier a glance, and then said, “What would you like?”
“Des macarons, deux petite baguette,” Madelyn said quickly.
Emilie said her order and turned to Madelyn. “I don’t think we’re alone. Look,
the Magise have spread all over the place. Look at him. Look at us!” she said
in a hushed voice. “In London, the mass attack is happening,” she said,
avoiding her niece’s eyes.
“It’s a matter of time before they come to France,” said
Madelyn, although she could feel her insides quivering. “We have to be on our
guard.” The effort of speaking fluent English weighed in her stomach. “Everywhere,
people are collapsing. The Wiheom are looking for us everywhere. They want
us. They’re hungry for our powers.”
“Madelyn, ma chere,
you have to be careful.” Emilie said. “I wish,” said Madelyn. “I wish Fleur
knew about her parents. I wish this wasn’t happening. I wish I wasn’t stuck
here just writing to Caitlin, because she’s in real danger right now. But we can’t
wish. We have to hold on.”
“Yes,” Emilie agreed. “Madelyn, you are right. This is not
the end.”
