An unexpected ally - a story

Vivian’s feet felt rooted to the stony road as she recognized the person who she thought was long gone.

Indigo.

Her black hair flew in the wind, her green eyes glinting with malice, and her dark blue hoodie encasing her from the chill.

Vivian took a step back. The gun in Indigo’s arms seemed more threatening in the twilight. It glinted eerily as the last of the sun’s rays bounced off it.

She suddenly felt very vulnerable in her dark green sweater dress.

“I found you,” said Indigo, her words flat and metallic. “Did you really think you could run away from me?”

Vivian knew Indigo would win this fight. She was unarmed.

“No,” she replied. She tried to stop the words, but this time her control failed her. “I only think – know – that I can defeat you.” When a sneer started to curl on Indigo’s face, Vivian focused and leaped on top of her.

Indigo gasped with surprise as Vivian landed on her, and the gun clattered away. Indigo was wiry, but she was stronger than Vivian. She twisted round and threw Vivian off her.

Vivian scrambled to get up, but Indigo held her down. She reached for the gun and…

Boom.

Both of the struggling girls turned, momentarily distracted. Then a blond shape came bursting through the trees, carrying a black revolver.

Solitude! Vivian recognized the little but fierce face immediately.

She pulled Indigo down, taking advantage of her surprise, and Solitude took Indigo’s legs.

Indigo struggled wildly, but Vivian hissed in her ear, “I know what you want, but you won’t be able to get it this way.”

Indigo screeched back, “You were the one who killed Marks!”

Vivian drew back a little in surprise. “I didn’t kill Marks, you…“ but as she was about to finish her sentence she saw by looking into Indigo’s face that she had been mistaken.

“I didn’t kill anyone!” Indigo gasped out. “You were seen nearby so I assumed it was you.”

Assumed.” Solitude sighed. “Assuming can get you to places where you don’t want to be.”

“So you’re not on Dracona’s side?” asked Vivian, shocked. Indigo looked surprised.

“Nope,” said Indigo. “Can you release me now?”

Vivian let her go, and motioned for Solitude to do so to. Solitude drew back sniffing disdainfully.

“You – you attacked us in the hotel!” she said.

“I thought you were on Dracona’s side,” replied Indigo, as if it was the easiest thing to explain in the world.

“But before that you said that you were.” Solitude voiced Vivian’s tumbling mind.

“Can’t you tell the difference between a true ally and a spy? It just shows I’m good at acting,” countered Indigo.

Vivian looked at Solitude, who was positioned in a way so she could grab Indigo if she tried to escape. Solitude shook her head slightly.

“How can we trust you?” asked Solitude, quietly. “If you’re good at acting then you may be acting now.”

It was a simple question, but one hard to answer.

Indigo didn’t hesitate. “I know I might be hard for you to trust,” she said, eyes gleaming in the twilight like a cat’s. “But I know something you don’t. I know that Ember Miracle’s whereabouts. And I know where she is right now.”

That was the trump card. Vivian’s mouth gaped open and Solitude looked at Indigo with a new respect. “How do you know this?” she asked.

“I’m a hacker.” Indigo pushed a strand of hair back. “I’ve hacked so many computers that the Government is wondering what’s been going on.”

“So where is she?” asked Vivian.

“Why should I tell you?” said Indigo, irritatingly.

Vivian’s eyes glinted with anger. “Don’t forget I’ve got this,” she hissed, pointing at the weapon in Solitude’s hand.

Indigo gave a sigh. “Fine. She’s in New York at the moment, but she’s going to escape to Texas pretty soon because they’re on her trail.”

“Who’s they?” asked Solitude, intrigued.

“The Government, Dracona, and the bots, of course!”

“We have to get to her. Somehow.” Solitude looked at Vivian.

“Oh, that won’t be a problem. She’ll land straight in our clutches,” replied Indigo.

Vivian grinned. “How?”

“She’ll run off here next. Here in Australia.”

“How does she get around?” Vivian was eagerly questioning now.

“A stolen helicopter.”

“Come with us,” said Vivian, standing up, and Solitude followed suit. Indigo clambered up, and they both finally got a real moment to admire her beauty. Vivian was in no means beautiful, though pretty, and Solitude could be pretty if she wanted to, Indigo really was beautiful.

Her hair was a sleek black, much the same as Vivian’s, and her skin a pale, peachy color. Her eyes were the color of a cat’s; green and bright. She was slim and tall like Vivian, but a little taller. She was wearing a dark blue hoodie over jeans and sneakers.

“Come on,” said Solitude. She looked at Indigo.

“We’ll do this somehow,” said Vivian. “First of all, we need to find Ember Miracle.”

Tbh this was all pretty out of character for Vivian. She seemed too accepting in this, when she's actually distrustful and cold. I'm not really proud of this.
