Ember Falls - book review

As I promised, here is a review of Ember Falls, the second book in the Green Ember series! I do have more important things to do than write book reviews (such as worry about the characters in Ember's End, which are currently in mortal peril - I'm halfway through the book), but who's judging?

Okay, so where do I begin?

This book is a great follow-up to The Green Ember, and I loved it. I don't knooooow how to review it, because it seems very hard to review without spoiling. 

Well. I'll have to try.

Ember Falls was exhilarating. It was intense. It was thrilling.

Okay, maybe not thrilling. That belongs to the third book. But yeah. 

Many of the plot twists were unexpected. There was one I saw coming a little early on, maybe because it had been hinted in the first book (a certain betrayal) but it doesn't matter. It wasn't the biggest plot twist.

The prose is still descriptive and I really like S.D. Smith's writing style, and his characters. I don't think I can gush enough about how well rounded his characters are, especially Picket. (Read the book...and you'll see. You'll probably be crying inside by the time you realize why I've said that.)

Anyway, the plot was solid (even though there was a tiny plot hole around the end) and exciting, too. One thing that I didn't understand at first in The Green Ember was why there were no female soldiers, but then Heyna came along. So we have a maximum of one female soldier in the army. I suppose that's not enough for me, but it's probably because if all these rabbits were humans, it'd probably be set in the Dark Ages, so.

Helmer's Fowlers were great comic relief in a serious book. I loved their banter and almost laughed my head off at times. 

And of course. It ends in a giant cliffhanger. Great going, S.D. Smith. I like cliffhangers but this one had my mind whirling.

I guess you'll just have to read the next book to know what happens next!
