Wonder - book review
I literally have nothing else to do other than write book reviews. Honestly, I should have written this a long time ago, but...you know...procrastination...
I read this book after watching the movie, but I was actually pretty little then (can't remember, but I was probably seven or eight) so it didn't resonate with me as much. After a friend told me how great it was, I decided to just go ahead and read it because there was nothing else at the bookstore worth my attention, lol.
Wonder is a book with a simple message; be kind. We probably hear these two words pretty much all the time, but when something is repeated over and over, it loses its meaning. The story is simple at first glance, but when you begin to become more deeply immersed in the book you see the complex, separate little lives of each character.
This is one of the things I love about this book. The characters. The POV switching is seamless and perfect. Whether we are watching the world from August's eyes, or Via's, or even Summer's, we realize how different each view of Auggie is. The characters have depth and actual backstories. These are, like, the best characters I've seen for a while.
It was kind of refreshing to read an ordinary book amid all the suspenseful, action-packed stories I usually like. In this world, the author stops. She looks at all the different aspects of the characters. She doesn't throw in some crazy plot twist or cliffhanger. Instead, she progresses with the story as it progresses. The pace is perfect.
I did have a few issues with the punctuation, though. The author would occasionally throw in multiple question and exclamation marks, and I'm not going to lie, it was kind of painful to read. (Ex. "What????" or "Yes!!!!!!"
What's more, the ending was awesome.
My next post will probably be more book reviews.
I'm sorry. ;)
