Clear Skies - Story excerpt

Hey everyone, how you doing? I'm back with another excerpt that I might post a Part 2 of, but basically, this is sort of like a glimpse!

---

I sat on my bed, watching the stars twinkle outside my window. The moon didn’t appear. My head wasn’t really lost in the twinkling lights. It was lost in my memories.
Why, oh why did she have to fade away? Why am I left all on my own? Why couldn’t I just press the rewind button and go back to when I was a baby? Why hadn’t I taken the chance to save her? But it was too late. Too late to go back, too late to escape from the trap I had set for myself. Tears streaked my face as I watched the stars disappear, one by one, blinking out. Those are shards of luck disappearing from my life, I thought miserably.
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. A shatter, like fragile glass, started breaking my heart. I pushed the blanket off the bed and collapsed on my pillow, the cinnamon curls falling back and hitting the goose feathers gently. My blue eyes dried slowly, and I got up and walked to the door to twist the handle. It was locked.

“Did you lock Claire Skye in her room? I will not accept denial!” a dangerously smooth voice traveled to Leila. The girl trembled with fear. “Yes, I did.” She then added under her breath, “I will never forgive you, and I will take revenge on you for killing my sister and forcing me to lock up her best friend.” The white-walled room held a layer of tension. Leila swept her dark head round and opened the wooden door. “Wait!” A demanding voice hit her ears. “Give me the keys.” Leila fumbled around in her handbag, pretending to take a long time to find them. She was actually sliding out the proper key to open the door. There were two keys in the keyring. One to open the room and one to open the window.
Leila slipped a fake key onto the keyring, then finally produced the keys jangling brightly. She tossed them to the man, and danced out of the room, letting her light blue ballet leotard’s skirt swirl around her.
She ran along the long hallway swiftly, her feet barely touching the floor as she leaped and spun. Leila ducked into an incoming door; her hostage room.
Leila knew that she was allowed out of her room because she had never been in this maze of a penthouse before. Claire had, and she knew her way around. Leila just knew the way to her room, the white-walled room, and Claire’s room.

Huh? Where am I?
Why are there just stars? Why am I so milky-white? Aha, I know. Perhaps I’m a ghost. But that is virtually impossible!
What’s my name? Let’s see…I think it’s…Ember?
Yep, Ember.
I can’t even pinch myself! What is going on?
