Captivated - excerpt

Heyooo! Yep, first excerpt of Enchantment. (Not counting backstories.) Anyway, I wanted to come up with this plot of how Madeline and Lillian find each other at a party thrown by the Queen of Nightlake. (Yup, best country name I could come up with.) Is this even like, canon? Like, part of the actual thing? I'll label this as NOT CANON and throw it away. Satisfied.

Additionally, I have a more developed character for the enemy...working on her backstory atm. I know everyone important in my thing is female, but mAlE gUyS cOmInG uP sOoN (I promiseee, the chicken nugget promisssse). My head is currently taking twists on time so let me quickly write this! Ty for reading this piece of cheese! <333333

"Madeline, you must get ready." Ariana picked out the white dress from my closet. "The ball starts in an hour." She reminded me of Cinderella, of the fairy godmother fussing over her for the party. I simply pushed her out. "Go," I said firmly. "I'll dress myself. I'm not a hand-and-foot person." She closed the door behind her as I tugged the slim-fit satiny cloth over myself. I fastened my red hair into place with two of the golden rose clips she had given me.

As I slipped my feet into the glistening white flats, I heard a noise outside, and two horses' neighs. Ugh, that's the carriage! I slipped a locket over my head and ran down the stairs of the orphanage.

I ran up the steps of my golden transport, and sat there, trying to look as neat and prim as possible. Without a word, the footman started the horses, and we were off.

My eyes drifted around as the city lamps glowed in the dull darkness of the night. The stars' pinpricks weren't as bright as they usually were. I fingered the key on my locket.

As we neared the castle, I noticed the turrets rising into the sky and glanced at the ornately carved wooden door. "Miss, we're here," I heard the footman, and opened the door and stepped out. It was eerily quiet outside, but as soon as I set foot inside the building, a burst of noise erupted. I made my way into the depth of the crowd, looking round for a familiar face.

I spotted a girl wearing a dark blue dress which was embroidered with gold and a gold headband. She had dark blue flats on that barely showed from underneath her gown. She had dark brown hair braided into a French crown, and she was wearing a locket with a padlock on it. Her cheeks were rosy, and her eyes were green, just like mine.

I made my way towards her. She looked slightly younger than me, perhaps ten years old. "Hello!" I called out, and she looked at me, her olive gaze boring into my eyes. "Hello." Her tone was careful and wary. "What's your name? Mine's Madeline." She looked at me. "My name's Lillian," she said, eyes glinting. She spotted the key on my neck. "Come out!" she suddenly urged.

We stood next to each other in the castle gardens. She lifted my locket and twisted it into hers. Then she clamped them together. A burst of brilliant white light flashed, and next thing I knew, was that we were left alone in the dark.
